Oasis Park continues to expand and have now
two new animals in the park. From 12 March, it is now possible to
visit our two cheetahs (Acinonyx Jubatus) that have joined the
‘African Savannah’ section of Oasis Park in an environment
that has been specially designed for these felines.
Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are carnivorous mammals of the feline
family. Their appearance is similar to greyhounds, extremely long and
thin legs, with a small, round head. Their head has characteristic
black lines from the eyes to the mouth. Their fur is brown-yellowy
covered with black spots. At the neck and the shoulders the fur is
thicker. Cheetahs are very unique creatures from the feline family and
the only representatives from the gender acinonyx.
They hunt thanks to their good sense of sight and great speed; they are
the fastest terrestrial animal reaching up to speeds of 120km/h in
short runs, their length is 2.85 metres and weigh from 45 to 65
kilogrammes. The natural habitats of the cheetah include a great part
of Africa from Algeria and Morocco to the Transvaal, and also Egypt,
Ethiopia, Arabia, Syria, Persia and India.
These two cheetahs are adults, one male and one female, and they are the first cheetahs to be introduced to the Canary Islands.
