On 1st of April, at 14:00h TAMASITE was
born, beautiful baby male giraffe, with spotted skin and ochre-coloured
fur. The baby watches with curiosity, everything that happens
around him.
This is the first baby born to his mother Emolo, who is the youngest of
our giraffe group, at three and a half years old, who was also born and
raised in captivity.
She is the first of the three females within this group of giraffes to
get pregnant. Tamasite was born under the watchful care of the vets,
the park caretakers and the other giraffes, all of who were there to
assure the mother had a tranquil birth. Also the lucky visitors who
were at the park that day enjoyed the birth of Tamasite.
Emolo began her labour at 12:00h and gave birth in completely natural
conditions, without any external help. At 14:00 h, TAMASITE fell from
two metres, as giraffes give birth standing up; his mum was quickly
helped by the other giraffes, which cleaned his nose and mouth for him,
so he could breathe properly. One hour later, TAMASITE got up to be fed
and then we found that his mother, Emolo did not want to breast-feed
her baby. The vets were prepared for this, as this is normal for
animals that are raised in captivity. However, Emolo did not try to
hurt him so the vets decided to give her some more time to get
acquainted with her new baby.
